Southeast Asia is one of the world’s most popular travel regions — and for good reason. Extraordinary food, ancient temples, turquoise beaches, dense jungles and some of the best value for money anywhere on Earth. But planning when to go requires understanding the region’s complex weather patterns.
The good news: there’s always somewhere great to visit in Southeast Asia. The key is knowing which countries are at their best when you’re traveling.
November to February: The Golden Window
This is the dry season across most of Southeast Asia and the most popular travel period. Temperatures are pleasant (25–32°C), humidity is lower and rainfall is minimal in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Malaysia’s west coast.
- Thailand: Perfect conditions across the entire country. Chiang Mai is crisp and clear. Phuket and Koh Samui beaches are excellent. Book accommodation 3+ months ahead for December and January.
- Vietnam: North Vietnam (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay) is cool and misty — bring a jacket. Central and South Vietnam (Hoi An, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City) are warm and dry. The ideal time to see the whole country.
- Cambodia: Angkor Wat is at its most spectacular — the rice fields around the temples are still green from the rains and the light is excellent for photography. December and January are peak months.
- Bali, Indonesia: Dry season runs May to September, but November to March is the wet season in Bali. Consider visiting Lombok or the Gili Islands instead during this period.
March to May: Heat and Festivals
The hottest months across the region. Temperatures regularly hit 35–40°C in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. This is shoulder season, which means lower prices and fewer crowds — if you can handle the heat.
- Thailand: Songkran (Thai New Year water festival) takes place in mid-April — one of the world’s greatest street parties. If you’re visiting Bangkok, Chiang Mai or any major city, this is unmissable.
- Myanmar: March and April are extremely hot but manageable in Inle Lake and Bagan’s early morning. Thingyan water festival (Myanmar’s Songkran equivalent) is spectacular.
- Indonesia (Bali): March to May is transitional — drier than January/February but not yet peak dry season. Good time for surfing on the south coast.
May to October: Wet Season Opportunities
The southwest monsoon sweeps across the region from May, bringing heavy rainfall — but this doesn’t mean every destination is off the table. Rain typically comes in heavy afternoon downpours rather than all-day drizzle, and the lush green landscapes are spectacular.
- Bali: May to September is Bali’s absolute best season — dry, sunny and perfect. The Gili Islands and Lombok are at their peak. This is the time to go.
- Vietnam’s North: May to October is the best time for Sapa’s rice terraces — the paddies are a stunning electric green during growing season.
- Philippines: The Visayas region (Cebu, Bohol, Siargao) has its best weather June to October, while Palawan is dry November to May. The Philippines requires careful planning by island.
- Singapore and Malaysia: Singapore has no true season — it rains year-round with afternoon showers. Penang and Kuala Lumpur are generally fine year-round.
